Las Posadas

Las Posadas

La Posadas (Spanish for shelter) is a traditional event commemorating the immigrant journey of Mary and Joseph. Their expedition was successfully re-created by two Boston high school students during this past holiday season on Three Kings Day, January 6, 2008. Mary and Joseph's re-enactment struggle to find food and shelter took place throughout the Boston Commons. More than 350 immigrant advocates, clergy affiliates, community leaders, students, and community members walked in solidarity in support of this significant event symbolizing the importance of Latin American traditions in today's America as well as strongly portraying the mistreatment of the 12 million immigrants living in the United States.

After marching throughout the Boston Commons, everyone joined the Paulist Center in an afternoon celebration of fellowship, music, food, and cultural activities for children. The celebration was characterized by 13 year-old Janelyth Santigo as "very traditional and festive...it was fun and I enjoyed the food." She adds her excitement over the skit, "I also enjoyed participating in the re-enactment and being part of something so important in my Mexican culture." The venue of this commending event was decorated in vibrant colors, hanging, and paper mache decorations; making the environment feel like home for our cultured audience. This lively traditional event was filled with a variety of Latin and Central American dishes and homemade drinks. The party atmosphere was filled with a touch of most Latin American countries' music as well as live mariachis.
